Hi, I'm Matthew...
I spent most of my life caring for animals. There has never been a time when I didn't share my life with an animal (usually more than one!). My mother shared my love for animals and fostered a deep appreciation for the connection we share with them. Later in life, I spent many years working in emergency veterinary services and volunteering in animal rescue. As life went on, I found myself becoming more involved in rescue efforts and Creature Comforts was born!
...and this is Colter
Colter is my loving, and very patient, husband. Although he is also an animal lover, Colter realized early on that my interest went farther than casual pet ownership. Through the years he has been undeniably supportive by helping with animal care, shuttling for vet visits, and dealing with the disruption that each intake creates. Creature Comforts wouldn't be possible without his support.
Meet the Ambassadors!
These critters have found their forever home with Creature Comforts. As ambassadors, they support outreach and education to support other critters in need. Learn more about them below!
The matriarch, or at least she thinks so! Lyla was a patient that presented at the ER where Matthew worked in 2009. She is a pom/pug that had a broken leg and was surrendered because she kept the family up all night crying when they couldn't afford pain meds. Matthew paid to have her leg amputated and they've been together ever since!
Matthew and Colter's first rescue as a partnership, Katya is a Russian tortoise that was found as a stray, covered in shell rot and chew marks from a larger animal. Named after Matthew's favorite drag queen, she has just as much personality.
Because everyone loves Potatoes! Potatoes was surrendered because she was digging and destructive while kept in a small cage. She is the true matriarch of the family and quite the cuddle bug. As long as she is getting time with the family, she isn't destructive at all!
Fierce and persistent, just like her namesake, Ginsburg was surrendered for having too much energy. They weren't wrong! This spunky gal really settled in when she met her sister, Reba.
Reba was found tied to a railroad tie. She was unleashed by a railroad worker who thought she was a wild animal and she followed him all the way back to his truck. Just like her namesake, she's a lover and a survivor.
Miguel was surrendered when is family recognized they didn't have the ability to care for him and his siblings, so he found his way into our lives. His side-eye is strong and he won't deal with your bull.
Tortnii is a Sulcata/African Spurred Tortoise. Her species is native to the Sahara Desert and can grow very large. Their needs are hard to meet in the Pacific Northwest and many are typically abandoned, even in warmer climates, due to their size. She was found as a stray in a climate that was unnatural to her but she now enjoys her time on our patio with her own hothouse and grazing pad.
